UP ON THE HOUSETOP

There was a dear couple who had no money.
Three little youngsters wouldn't think it was funny

If Christmas morning found their stockings unfilled.
The drab Christmas tree left their hearts un-thrilled.

With appetites not completely appeased,
They tumbled into bed -- not a one was pleased

At seeing Daddy's wallet so thin and so flat.
No one had much supper (not even the cat).

It wasn't hard to sleep that night --
Afraid Christmas wouldn't be much of a sight.

Their mother and father sighed in their sleep --
Felt sad that they had dismal secrets to keep.

Strange bells were heard very early next morning.
They felt a bit startled, without any warning

A booming, jovial voice seemed to say,
"None of you will miss out this Christmas Day."

No one reallly heard hooves on the roof,
But the sight of such splendors was living proof

That the milk of human kindness will be everywhere
On Christmas morning -- Santa must have been there.
